The Retreat of Libations in Colorful Cartagena

The city of Cartagena, Colombia is colorfully exquisite and captivating through its visual and performing arts, as well as through its historical architecture and culinary expression. The culture and country are centered around family and tradition, though individuality is welcomed. When visiting Cartagena, a perfect activity to relax and to discover a playful and creative outlet, is by taking a mixology class. There is more tasting than making, but tasting is the most exciting part anyway, isn’t it? I joined three of my family members for a night of libation discovery. In this small hideaway across the bridge from the Old Town of Cartagena, is El Barōn—a bar filled with an endless supply of libation discoveries. I savored rums old and new, as well as my share of bourbon and gin.

My favorite concoction that I nestled into my place of retreat was found in the Puro—consisting of Baluarte 8 rum, caramelized onion cordial, bitter blend, and tobacco smoke. This strong and smoky cocktail concluded my night of libations like no other—a taste of Ernest Hemingway and Jack Sparrow combined. Its tasters won’t be disappointed.
